Should You File an Insurance Claim? The Deductible Math

3 min read · updated July 2026 · MESHA Team

File the claim, or pay out of pocket? Do this math first.

Something broke and the repair will cost real money. Before you call the claims line, there is a five minute exercise that can save you from a decision you regret in either direction.

The core of it is simple: repair estimate minus deductible equals what the claim is roughly worth to you. But the details trip people up. Percentage deductibles for wind or hail can be far higher than the flat deductible you remember. Hidden damage can turn a small loss into a large one after you have already decided to absorb it. And filed claims become part of your claims history, which insurers can consider later.

Our free guide, The Deductible Math: When Filing a Claim Makes Sense, covers it in plain English:

  • What a deductible really is, with simple worked examples
  • Flat versus percentage deductibles, and how to find yours on the declarations page
  • The three zones: pay out of pocket, judgment call, definitely file
  • The situations where you should always file, no math required
  • A six step worksheet you can finish in five minutes

Insurance exists for the losses that would truly hurt. The goal is to use it deliberately, not fearfully.

For adjusters: the question every homeowner asks you

"Should I even file this?" You hear it from clients, neighbors, and half the people you meet at cookouts. A clear, branded worksheet turns that question into a relationship instead of a shrug.
