Coverage Disagreements: An Adjuster Escalation Guide

3 min read · updated July 2026 · MESHA Team

This guide is for staff adjusters, independent adjusters working under file reviewers, and public adjusting team members who answer to a lead. In other words, anyone whose coverage conclusions can be overruled by someone else's signature.

The scenario is one of the most stressful in the profession, and one of the least discussed. You documented the loss and reached a conclusion. Someone above you disagrees and tells you to write it differently. Sometimes they are right, and their experience catches something you missed. Sometimes the policy genuinely reads two ways. And sometimes the instruction asks you to ignore what you saw, which puts your license, your integrity, and the insured's claim on the table at the same time.

Most adjusters respond in one of two bad ways: silent compliance that builds resentment and risk, or an emotional confrontation that torches the relationship without fixing the file. There is a better path, and it can be learned.

Inside the free PDF:

  • The three types of coverage disagreement, and the quick test that tells you which one you are in
  • A five step first response checklist to run before you escalate anything
  • The five rung escalation ladder, from direct conversation to compliance channels
  • The ethical lines you never cross, no matter who is asking
  • Self protection habits: notes, timelines, E&O awareness, and license obligations
  • The common mistakes that turn a professional dispute into a career problem

Download the free playbook and keep it where you can find it on a bad day. You will not need it often. When you do, you will be very glad it exists.

Strong positions start with strong records. See how MESHA keeps every photo, note, and document organized automatically, so your file can defend your work the moment anyone questions it. Join the waitlist at mesha.cc/waitlist
